Brief updates: Muddy 12; Psyren 14-17; Shiki 3-4

By Anna

Before diving into the other series, I’d like to mention briefly that Muddy’s ending was decent. It ended on a cheerful note, which makes it easier to accept its premature ending. I really hope Shou Aimoto will get another chance eventually, and be more lucky.

Now for ‘Psyren’ and ‘Shiki’, possibly with spoilers.

Psyren 14-17

By now, I have shaken off the mistaken initial idea of Psyren as anything other than a typical shounen manga. To be quite fair, it is really not bad, once you’ve accepted that it is not going to be orginal any time soon. The characters have been transported to Psyren again, and just like during their first visit, only a small handful of characters have survived the first attack of a monster. Well, of course it was not difficult to predict which characters would be the ones to survive… and I hope that the new characters stick around for a while, because the three main characters still don’t interest me that much. A greater number of characters will raise the chances that I’ll eventually find someone to root for!

Shiki 3-4

This is the kind of series that should probably be read in tankoubon form, instead of one chapter each month. Even though the chapters are blessedly long (almost 60 pages), I always feel as if nothing really happened. The large amount of characters is probably at fault here. There are always new characters introduced, mostly just briefly mentioned, and for a more casual reader, it’s impossible to remember them all.

The main characters’ storylines move only at a snail’s pace, too. Come on! After 240 pages, I still don’t know anything about Natsuno that wasn’t already mentioned in the first chapter!?

My dislike of the artwork is not helping either: I really need to wait until more chapters are out and then come back to this series. Maybe if there are five or more chapters to read in one go, I will enjoy ‘Shiki’ more.

Seriously I don’t see what people see in Psyren. The male lead is starting to act like a bitch just like a lot of other Shonen series only now he’s getting to the think pervertedly and get smacked around at ever turn obviously since he’s male and can’t possibly control himself part of the story since it seems to always come around while the people with control over their powers show just how great they are to everyone as they use their powers on them to toy with them like kids in a toy store.

I have not been keeping up with it, but I agree that Psyren gets more credit than it deserves. Although I must say that I’ve seen a lot of people lose their patience with it. I’ve no idea about how it fares in Japan, though…
But the first impression, I believe, was good, and the first impression tends to stick, maybe?
